Summary

A crane signaler (also known as a Swamper) plays a crucial role in lifting operations by guiding crane operators during lifts to ensure safety and efficiency. They are responsible for providing clear, correct signals to direct crane movements when the operator does not have a full view of the load or the lift area.


Job responsibilites

  • Responsible if a lift needs to be made in cooperation with the lifting equipment
  • Must identify lifting hazards with onsite crew members and establish proper
  • Always part of the lifting operation, especially when:
    • The operator cannot see the load and/or landing
    • The operator cannot see the path of travel of the load or of the
    • The operator is too far away from the load to have proper judgement of
    • The crane is working within a boom’s length of the approach limits to power lines or any other electrical equipment.
  • Inspects the hoisting & rigging equipment and hardware daily before use. Manufacturer load limitation must be respected at all
  • Secures loads with proper rigging devices using his hands and/or power tools. Depending on the size of the item being lifted, he may be required to climb, descend and maneuver around the load to properly secure
  • Controls movement of loads through restricted paths using tag lines or similar
  • Communicates with construction staff verbally and/or with hand signals so as to ensure the safety and correct movement of
  • Inspects and sets-up rigging for safety and maneuverability before each movement, considering the characteristic of each
  • Ensures compliance to safe rigging practices at every step of the rigging
  • Ensures that all rigging gear is stored in a proper manner and is ready for the next

Job requirements

Required certifications:

  • Working at Heights
  • Worker Health and Safety Awareness (4 Steps)
  • WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
  • Hoisting & Rigging Training

Experience & Skills

  • Knowledge of standard crane hand signals
  • Familiarity with lifting and rigging equipment
  • Understanding of safety regulations and procedures (e.g., OSHA, ANSI)
  • Good communication skills (verbal and non-verbal)
  • Ability to work in high-risk environments
  • Physical fitness and ability to stand for extended periods
